Program Notes

This is an unusual and imaginative setting of a lovely British melody, in a rather contemporary vein. It begins with the tune in trumpets with interesting textural counter-material, followed by upper woodwinds. The trumpets again take the first phrase, clarinets and flutes the second, followed by unison flutes with the counter-melody in low woodwinds. The melody makes successive appearances in various voices with interesting rhythmic variation and fragmentary contrapuntal lines, with the final statement dissonant yet climactic.
