Program Notes

…I am reminded of the relentless, seemingly swift passage of time throughout our lives. So often we say to ourselves, “It seems like just yesterday…” I find myself more and more totaling in my mind the years since various life events occurred, and reacting in amazement.

In Michigan the changing of the seasons is so beautiful it hurts. Although the magnificent, varied colors of the dying leaves usher in the dark, ostensibly endless winter, the promise of rebirth in the spring gets us through the long, cold nights. Sometimes it seems like life is slipping through my fingers each time this ritual rolls around, but then I reflect on the overwhelmingly joyous experiences I have shared with my family, friends, and students. The falling leaves remind me to cherish each moment that lies ahead and be thankful for the special times gone by.

Commissioned by the Midland High School Music Parents Association in honor of William H. Monroe II for his 39 years of teaching. His musicianship and caring personality had a tremendous effect on students and staff alike.

He taught band in Iowa Park and Irving in Texas, Battle Creek Pennfield in Michigan, and then spent his last thirty years in Midland, Michigan. He truly loved the students he taught, and the adventures they had together will never be forgotten.
