Program Notes

As the Days Become Shorter was commissioned by Richard Hooper and the Lampasas High School Band, Lampasas, Texas, and was composed in the memory of Chris Cruz, 1989-2007, a member of the Lampasas High School Band who died in a car crash on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Chris was a saxophone player, a percussionist, an Eagle Scout and a junior in high school.

This musical tribute is a celebration of life and spirit. The title refers to Chris’s favorite time of year, the end of summer and the start of fall, when the days become shorter and the activities begin. Band camp, football games, band competitions and the indomitable force of youth all are reflected in the energetic sounds and vibrant nature of this thrilling new work for wind band. In addition to a beautiful saxophone solo, the work calls for over 50 percussion instruments.
