Program Notes

Jody Nagel, professor of composition at Ball State University, had no programmatic ideas in mind when he started to composed As You Like It. The William Shakespeare play of the same name is a pastoral comedy replete with the usual array of love triangles and false identities that contains profound metaphors and ethical narratives.

The first movement of Nagel's work was originally composed in 1980 for French horn and piano and was given the title As You Like It purely by mistake. When the composer was asked what the piece should be call, he responded, "You should name it as you like." His words were misheard and reordered to As You Like It, and the title stuck.
