Biography

Arend Gerds (b. 1987) is a Dutch composer.

From 2007 until 2013, Arend studied at the ArtEZ Academy of music with Alex Manassen (NL) and the Montclair State University (VS), obtaining Bachelor and Master’s degrees in composition. During his studies, he participated in several projects and festivals. During these projects and master classes, his works were performed by, among others, the Matangi String Quartet, the Aurelia saxophone quartet, the Calefax ensemble, the "de ereprijs" orchestra and "It Nije ensemble," all leading Dutch ensembles in the performance of contemporary music.

Recently he wrote compositions for het Vers ensemble, het Baldur Gitaar ensemble, EVA Vocaal ensemble en Duo Wolfs/KleinJan. He also wrote compositions for various bands, including CMV Oranje Grootegast, Psalm 150 Dinxperlo and the Vriezenveense Harmonie.

Gerds works both as an independent composer and as a teacher: e.g., at the ArtEZ academy of Music, where he teaches composition to students doing a specialization or minor in composition.
