Program Notes

In Greek mythology, Apollo is an Olympian god known for truth, prophecy, healing, poetry, plague, knowledge, light, and music. He was regarded as having a cheerful personality and had the ability to communicate joy through the music he played on his lyre.

This dynamic work is spirited and energetic. A joyful fanfare sets the mood with driving syncopated brass statements and dramatic woodwind flourishes. As the piece moves through contrasts of texture and dynamics, trumpet and trombone are given solos. An interesting call-and-response passage between woodwinds, brass, and percussion then leads to a powerful full ensemble section that brings the work to a dramatic conclusion. The piece includes exuberant melodic material, powerful harmonies, changing meters, and active percussion scoring.
