Program Notes

Written at the request of Jay Gephart to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Purdue Bands, Anthem opens as a bright, twittering machine made of flutes, vibraphone, piano, and glockenspiel, gradually transforming into a full tutti rock anthem. A variety of musical textures and colors throughout the composition make the concert listening experience especially engaging and enjoyable. The audience is taken on a musical ride from start to finish, starting with a unique, distant flute chatter and then progressively building to the full-powered, pulse-driven percussion. A continuous undercurrent of simple to complex rhythm drives each melody forward as the music develops.

Mr. Bryant thinks of this piece as a cousin to his other work, Radiant Joy, except veering toward “rock” instead of “jazz” in style. The composer hopes to create waves of euphoric bliss rolling off of the stage by the end of the composition.
