Program Notes
Angel Band is a three-movement suite based on eighteenth and nineteenth century American hymn tunes: Timothy Swan's Rainbow (Movement 1), William Billings's Africa (Movement 2), and William Bradbury's Angel Band (Movement 3). These hymns are located in various editions of The Christian Harmony and The Sacred Harp, anthologies of American hymn music. Angel Band combines material borrowed from the three hymn tunes with the composer's own harmonic and melodic material.
