Program Notes

Quiet and serene, this musical work brings memorable lyric melodies and soft harmonies to the front to create an expressive piece with a slightly nautical flavor. Very soft melodic lines begin, then swell as they rise and ebb like the flowing waves on the oceans. Reaching a dynamic climax the music then gradually fades, much like a ship that sets sail and quietly disappears over the horizon.

And Sail Away takes its title from a Robert Louis Stephenson poem entitled My Bed Is a Boat. The poem describes how children often prepare for bed at night as if they are going on a long journey, packing various items they might need. This resonated deeply with me, as I was helping my two-year-old son get used to his bedtime routine. The piece is a lullaby dedicated to my son Thomas.
