Program Notes

American Journey is a concert suite derived from the musical score that accompanies Steven Spielberg’s short film The Unfinished Journey (1999). An effort requested by the White House, this film is a combination of original music, poetry, and images designed to evoke the highlights and spirit of the last century in these United States of America. It was shown at the Millennium celebrations in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial on New Year’s Eve, 1999. The full fifteen-minute suite consists of six movements, each of which deals with a specific aspect of American history or culture portrayed in the film. Also present are elements hinting at the grand American musical style pioneered by composers such as Aaron Copland and Howard Hanson.
