Program Notes

American Holiday is based upon three contrasting themes. The first, heard at the outset, is characterized by a dotted rhythm and cross-metrical phrases. The second, which appears at m. 56, features syncopation. The third theme is a long, lyrical melody which is first presented by a solo flute in m. 105.
