Program Notes

Based upon the original Dallas Brass commission, this very popular concert band work is now back in print. Featuring flourishes for trumpets and a brief trumpet solo as well as showy parts for woodwinds and percussion, it will work well as opener, closer, or fanfare.

- Program note by composer

Originally composed for the Dallas Brass and later transcribed by the composer for full symphonic band, the American Fanfare is a wonderful example of colorful craftsmanship in modern wind ensemble writing. Designed as a short opening fanfare, the work begins with a seven-note theme in triple meter played by the trumpets alone. The main theme is stated a little later, again with trumpets, and, after a softer section in quadruple meter, the main theme returns for a dramatic conclusion.

-Program Note by William V. Johnson for the Cuesta Wind Ensemble concert program, 11 December 1993
