Program Notes

Amen, Op. 80, was written in 2011 for a concert celebrating the composer's fiftieth birthday. The concert, performed by the BläsphilharmonieRhein-Main, was conducted by Rudin and featured his music exclusively.

As he was preparing for this concert, Rudin began reflecting on his fiftieth birthday and nearly thirty-five year as a composer. He felt a deep sense of satisfaction and comfort with his life as an artist. The word "amen" translated to the German phrase "So sei es" or "so be it," which is the positive conclusion the composer experienced as he reflected upon his life at that time.

Amen, Op. 80, is a musical manifestation of the thoughts and feelings Rudin had at the time it as composed. The piece is filled with long musical lines, colorful harmonic progressions, and a warm full orchestration. While the form is relatively simple, it includes what Rudin refers to as "a little surprise" toward the end.
