Program Notes

A remarkably first-rate and successful transcription of the most recognizable composition of all the literature. Opening in the authentic key of C minor, the three-note motif begins with tutti ensemble and quickly fragments into various note groupings. This is contrasted by a lyrical second theme (E-flat major) using woodwind colors while the underpinning motif continues its presence. A very well-scored development section ensues exploring several key centers and containing very dramatic shifts of volume, color and moods. This leads to the closing of the exposition using the opening motif. A thrilling coda brings the movement to a faithful and very convincing conclusion. Many wind parts are identical to the orchestral original.
