Program Notes

Beethoven wrote his seventh symphony in 1812 while staying in the Bohemian spa town of Teplice in hopes of improving his health. It was premiered in 1813 with Beethoven himself conducting. The second movement was the most popular and had to be immediately encored. The instant popularity of the Allegretto resulted in its frequent performance separate from the other movements of the symphony. It is still one of Beethoven’s best-known melodies and was recently featured in the award-winning motion picture “The King’s Speech.” This edition by Robert Longfield captures the expression of the original scored for younger players.
