Program Notes

In 1784 Edward Jones recorded on paper the current melody used in All Through the Night. Of anonymous origins, the melody probably dates back to the 1600s, a Welsh folksong. Over the years there have been many lyrics written for this melody. The lyrics we sing today were written by Sir Harold Boulton in 1884. This song has always been one of my favorites mainly because of its beautiful lyrics and its use, not only as a Christmas song, but also as a lullaby.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee, All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee, All through the night;
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping, Hill and vale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones’ watch am keeping, All through the night

Angels watching e‘er around thee, All though the night
In thy slumbers close surround thee, All through the night
They will of all fears disarm thee, No forebodings should alarm thee
They will let no peril harm thee, All through the night
While the moon her watch is keeping, All through the night

While the weary world is sleeping, All through the night
O’er thy spirit gently stealing, Visions of delight revealing
Breathes a pure and holy feeling,
All through the night.
