Program Notes

All Points Bulletin: In Hot Pursuit by Mark Wolfram is an original composition for concert band and video. This programmatic work tells the story of a jewel thief who is being doggedly chased by the authorities until the inescapable conclusion. Running, skulking, climbing, driving -- this determined thief tries any way he can to elude the authorities -- and always with the stolen jewels in hand.

All Points Bulletin: In Hot Pursuit highlights sweeping melodies, colorful sonorities, multiple time signature changes, independent solo lines, and cinematic composition in an exciting blend.

The work was requested and commissioned by Dr. Amy Roisum Foley and the Minnesota State University, Mankato Concert Wind Ensemble who led a commissioning consortium including Dr. Troy Bennefield and the Washington State University (Pullman) Symphonic Band, Dr. Joan deAlbuquerque and the Luther College Bands (Decorah, Iowa), Dr. Donald Lovejoy and the Winona (Minn.) State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, William M. Perrine and the Concordia University (Ann Arbor, Mich.) Wind Ensemble, Chief Warrant Officer David J. Stordalen and the 34th Infantry Division "Red Bull" Band (Rosemount, Minnesota), and Joseph Witkowski and the Annandale (Va.) High School Bands. All Points Bulletin: In Hot Pursuit had its premiere with the Minnesota State University Concert Wind Ensemble on February 24, 2015 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Performance Notes

When performing this work, the video is projected above or near the ensemble. The conductor wears headphones and follows a click track (a customized electronic metronome) which allows for perfect synchronization between the recorded video and the live performance. Even through the multiple time signature changes (one running sequence has the following: 3/4, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 3/4, 5/8, 3/4, 9/8 -- then repeated -- and all with an even eighth-note feel), the music and picture lock like they're one.
