Program Notes

Air and Variations was composed in June of 2005. It is designed to expose students to the “theme and variation” compositional form through the use of contrasting styles, tempi and meters. The work opens with a statement of the theme, which is presented by flute, clarinet and trumpet in a legato, lyrical style. Variation 1 provides a rhythmic version of the theme in a toccata that features marcato eighth notes. Variation 2 is a romance that presents the theme in a slow, expressive setting. Variation 3 is a gently lilting waltz in which the theme appears once again in the flute and trumpet parts. Variation 4 is a stately, triumphant processional-style march which concludes the work.

Written and dedicated to Laura Singletary for her dedication to music education and devotion to her students.
