Program Notes

The Air, which is marked “Mournfully,” is slow and legato throughout and uses the Irish folksong known as Gilderoy. The contrasting Jig is marked “With a lilt,” and uses the traditional Irish dance tune Jig of Slurs. The Air is in G minor, while the Jig moves to E major. The otherwise standard scoring includes a piano, while the necessary percussion section scoring, featured in the Jig, requires a minimum of five players including bells, snare drum, and tambourine.
