Program Notes

Influenced by the power of the drum, African Journey explores the fascinating sounds often associated with ceremonies and rituals of tribal Africa. After a bold introduction by the lower pitched instruments and percussion, a chant-like melody emanates from the upper voices; this melody continues to appear in fragments throughout the piece. The intense rhythms suddenly subside into a soft and lyrical passage. The piece builds in energy as it moves toward the journey's powerful conclusion.
