Program Notes

The 5th Symphony is one of Mahler’s most famous and beloved compositions. From this symphony, the fourth movement may be the most frequently performed work. It was featured in the 1971 Luchino Visconti film Death in Venice. Scored only for strings and harp and often performed as an independent work, the beautiful melody and sentimental harmony clearly convey feelings of affection.

This adaptation was created for Saitama Sakae High School Wind Orchestra’s 39th Annual Concert. The expressiveness, colorful timbres, dynamic extremes and elongated phrasings in the woodwinds (flutes, clarinets, and saxophones) from the original string parts, are a most noteworthy element of this beautiful arrangement.
