Program Notes

Across the Halfpipe is the third movement of a suite titled Minnesota Portraits, which was originally a two-movement piece named Two Winter Songs. Shortly after completing the second movement, Rest, I received a note from the commissioner of the piece who expressed how much he would like to add a contrasting third movement. He went on to say that many of his students snowboard and they asked if there could be a movement about snowboarding. This sounded like it would be a blast to write, so I based this movement on the aerial tricks snowboarders do each time they cross the halfpipe. Their performances build as they gain momentum the further down the pipe they go, so I tried to structure the overall build and excitement in Across the Halfpipe the same way.

- Program Note by composer

Enjoy a jubilant celebration of sounds and rhythms in this refreshing work that musically explores the exhilaration of snowboarding or skateboarding on the "halfpipe." An energetic percussion fabric combined with twisting and turning patterns of melodies and riffs are used in this challenging and appealing offering for the mature concert band.
