Program Notes

Starting from a small ensemble of upper woodwinds and xylophone, this gripping work roars to life as the work takes shape in a wildly exciting musical scenario. Wild Dance features mixed and asymmetric meters, a smoking presto tempo, and a huge variety of scoring combinations that make it a wild musical ride unlike any other. Composer Akey has here created another truly stellar work that should find its way onto concerts of fine groups around the world!

- Program Note by Grand Mesa Music

Dedicated to Bill Richardson, director of bands at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, Wild Dance is a light and playful work that uses mixed meter, asymmetrical meter, and brisk tempo to maintain a fun and energetic feel throughout. Written in seven-part rondo form, Akey keeps the audience guessing through not only constant meter changes, but by frequent orchestration changes and dramatic dynamic shifts as well.

- Program Note by McCracken Middle School Symphonic Band concert program, 18 December 2014
