Program Notes

While the Dew is Still on the Roses was commissioned by Jeff and Betsy Hornick, members of Oregon Symphonic Band. The work is in memory of Jeff’s grandmother, Vanessa Patch. The collaboration of this project resulted as a wonderful act of providence: While tracing his family’s history Jeff discovered that he and composer David Gillingham are related to each other as distant cousins, sharing a common ancestor, Gillingham’s great grandfather, Asbury Wellington Gillingham. Jeff’s parents grew up in Richland Center, Wisconsin, the same town where both of Gillingham’s parents were raised.

The work is based on two lovely old hymns that were played at the memorial service for Vanessa Patch, In the Garden, and Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling. The overall mood of the piece exudes reflection and hope, and is a wonderful addition to the wind band repertoire.
