Program Notes

There are times in life when it is hard to find the right words. At times like this music is often able to speak in ways we cannot. My wish is that Where Words Cannot Go can be whatever it needs to be for anyone who hears it.

This piece was written from a place of profound empathy for those who have experienced the loss of someone important in their lives. While writing, I was personally thinking about those who have lost someone to suicide. I hope this piece can be a source of light and healing for those who face any kind of grief and also for those who are looking for hope.

I ask that conductors use wisdom in deciding how to speak about this piece. On one hand, this piece can simply be about loss, healing, or searching for light. On the other hand, it may be possible to talk about healing from a specific type of loss. I also think teaming up with mental health professionals or a counseling center when working on this piece can be a profound experience.
