Program Notes

A remarkable work representing the highest standards of band composition that tells the Biblical story of Job and his never-give-up attitude. Based on the spiritual Balm in Gilead, it is at times intimate and reflective, at times exuberant and unrelenting but ultimately uplifting and inspiring. There is much to appreciate in the scoring, from transparent textures that allow each voice in the ensemble to be heard to the captivating power of the full ensemble; the full spectrum of sound is displayed.

Commissioned by the East Shore Honors Band, Port Huron, Michigan, by David and Barbara Teeple; Scott Teeple, conductor, in memory of Barb's mother, Florence Loxton.
