Program Notes

We Three Groovin’ Kings is a marvelous reimagining of a timeless Christmas classic transformed with an easy going Jazz groove. Composer Gabe Musella captures the spirit of the iconic scene from the Bible by incorporating three instrumental soloists and a Middle-Eastern groove to help set the scenery. The piece opens with a spirited introduction that soon transitions into a chorale based upon the chords of the Christmas hymn. As the soloists enter, the mood of the piece alters slightly as the percussion soloist moves into a Middle-Eastern groove. We Three Groovin’ Kings concludes with a subtle reiteration of the last verse of the hymn played by solo guitar, capturing the mood as the piece comes to a solemn close.

We Three Groovin’ Kings was commissioned by and dedicated to the North Shore Senior High School Wind Ensemble in commemoration of their invitation to perform at the 71st annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, 2017.
