Program Notes

We Praise Thy Name is a chorale prelude based on the hymn "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" (Grosser Gott). The composition is a spiritual search that everyone experiences sometime in their life. The song starts joyfully as the search begins. As the composition's development begins, you can hear confusion and self doubt. This is accomplished by several twists and turns of the melody using various motivic fragments. At the height of self-doubt, the hymn is stated in the key of B major (a severe departure from the tonic key of F major), and presented in 4/4 time, so the overall feel of the hymn is thrown a little off. Slowly, through the use of more melodic fragments, the melody is finally restated back in the tonic key. By using pedal points, the excitement builds up to the final statement in m. 166, representing a joyful end to this journey.

I would like to dedicate this composition to Dr. Mona Rasmussen, who was my spiritual teacher through a tough time in my life. She helped me see the way and for that, I will be eternally grateful.
