Program Notes

The Wayward Seafarer is a lively set of variations based upon the well-known sea shanty What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor. The work brims with instrumental color and energy. The variations that follow the melody develop in interesting rhythmic and harmonic ways, and in the composer’s own words, vary “from rowdy, to whimsical, to introspective.”
