Program Notes

I was commissioned by Iizuka City to compose Viva Sugar Road March to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the opening of “Chikuzen Musyuku”, which is six post towns in the Chikuzen domain (currently Fukuoka Prefecture) on the Nagasaki Kaidō.

During the Edo period, there was “Dejima” in Nagasaki, and it was the only area where we could interact with foreign countries through the isolation policy. The sugar that came from there was transported from Nagasaki to Saga and Fukuoka through the Nagasaki Kaidō. The confections adopted from Portugal, Spain, etc. such as castella and bolo that use sugar, have become famous throughout Japan. Nagasaki Kaidō has come to be known as “The Sugar Road”.

I composed this march in minor scale using a Japanese scale, and in the middle section I tried to express the state of “Daimyo procession” when “Sankin-kōtai”(alternate attendance) with a devised rhythm. The sound of this work expresses the emotion of the Edo period with a light rhythm, and expresses the dignity of old Japan with a magnificent fanfare.

I want many people to know about “The Sugar Road”.
