Program Notes

Vistas de Espana is a collection of tunes that draw from melodies of Spanish folksongs and dance music. The composer embellishes and develops contrasting rhythms and melodies to dramatize the undeniably romantic and haunting qualities of music that can only have originated in Spain.

This work was commissioned by Christopher Izzo, conductor of the Western Illinois University Concert Band, Macomb, Illinois in 1971. At that time, he was interested in new vistas for his students to explore. Simultaneously, Robert J. Dvorak was considering an orchestra piece on Spanish themes, for even as a lad, he had fallen in love with the music of Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla. So, with Izzo's request, Dvorak decided to challenge the world of band music with a piece that called upon woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments to emulate the traditional string instruments of the Spanish culture in producing sounds which would emulate the magic Spanish symphonic sounds we've known.
