Program Notes
Visions of Light was commissioned by Kevin Murphy and the Wells Cathedral School Wind Ensemble. It is scored for a slightly modified orchestral wind section, and is made up of five movements: The first, “Overture Brillante,” is written in a “gay, showy, sparkling style,” while the second, “Shadows,” is dark, a little spooky and frightening, featuring some unusual performing devices. The third movement is “Coruscation Waltz,” described as “a vivid but short-lived splendor.” The fourth movement, “Intermezzo,” is a reflective interlude, “an appearance of reflected light,” while the final movement is a “bubbly, luminescent, frolicsome finale.” (Descriptions provided by the composer).
