Program Notes
A View from Istanbul is an arrangement of a Munajat Melody. A Munajat is an Islamic lyrical poem used as a prayer to God. This melody would normally have been performed with instruments such as the rebab (plucked string instrument), the flute and a drum and would have been used as a dance. The title derives from the city’s long history as a cultural melting pot and a vision of its famous architectural and historical mosques, churches, monuments and other buildings.
