Program Notes
Loosely translated as "Four Absurd Caricatures," Wanek's Vier Grotesken was written for the Mainz Wind Ensemble. It is a collection of four short movements based on serialist techniques. The first movement is in a moderate 3/4 and features the flute with a melody that is almost but not quite a strict tone row. The second movement features sharp exclamations from the upper woodwinds against sustained tones by the flute and bassoon, giving way to an extended "drum break" before ultimately wrapping up with a furious flourish. The third movement is a brash and humorous dance featuring the trumpet, while the fourth is a dizzying and "grotesque" frenzy of notes.
