Program Notes

The setting of the traditional folk song the Wee Cooper O' Fife is of that genre and reflects the gentle charm, humour and down-to-earth character of this well-loved Scottish composer. He treats us to an intricate but delicate masterpiece of scoring that depicts the values and tastes of a bygone era. Written in a busy fugue and variation form, it is of a 6/8 conception with multiple rhythms and syncopated issues played at high speed.

The work was commissioned for the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland by the Scottish Amateur Music Association in 1979.
