Program Notes

Lope composed this pasodoble for the city which he loved and which in turn (according to contemporary newspaper accounts) idolized the talented young bandmaster. Valencia, now Spain’s third-largest city, was founded in prehistoric times alongside the Mediterranean Sea. Nearby Sagunto was captured by Hannibal in 219 B.C., and many Phoenician relics and Roman ruins may still be seen in this beautiful and historic area. Proof of a longtime interest in music is provided by numerous ancient artifacts, including an Therian vase from the third century B.C. which shows dancing musicians playing the aulos, the tuba, and the sistrum. In addition to the Municipal Band of Valencia (conducted by Lope until his premature death), the area is also the home of the famous Banda Primitiva, founded in Liria in 1819 and reportedly Spain’s oldest civil music organization. Whether playing in its own Atheneaum Concert Hall, competing at the World Band Contest in Kerkrade, Holland, marching down Fifth Avenue in New York City, or concertizing at the 1985 WASBE conference in Kortrijk, Belgium, or during the 1993 WASBE conference in Valencia, the Banda Primitiva is recognized as an outstanding musical organization.
