Program Notes

Luis wrote me a Cello Concerto which the Cleveland Winds recorded and filmed last year (2022), and makes a marvelous video – I go to it whenever I'm depressed. We did the UK premiere of that piece on July the 10th. Luis came across, and he came with this little piece, because Matthew, my second son, was due to come out and hear the premiere, which was in memory of my third son – all of my sons seem to die. And he never came, because he died in August [2021]. So Luis never met him, and so this is dedicated to Matthew – to The Unknown Friend. And I think – well, somebody, I think it was Adam Gorb, said that the piece is so poignant. It's full of sentiment for me, but not sentimental. It's difficult to write band music that's not sentimental, and I think this is it.
