Program Notes

Unfamiliar Trees is about both the joys and terrors of being or feeling lost. I’m often interested in nonlinear narrative and the way sonic events can trigger a listener’s expectations, which in turn may be either fulfilled or subverted. The piece is in three sections (slow-fast-slow) that flow together without pause. A floating melody, first heard in the flutes and glockenspiel, attempts to act as a sort of signpost, guiding the listener’s journey; but this melody is often overpowered by more forceful musical gestures.
