This classic work for young bands has remained a tried-and-true staple in the repertoire and is performed regularly, appearing on numerous state lists. Carefully adapted here, bands with incomplete or nontraditional instrumentation can now perform this successfully at concerts or contests.

Elliot Del Borgo (1938-2013) composed Two British Folk Songs for the 1993 Vestal Junior High School Band Festival — Arden Wellington and Christine Lewis, directors. The piece opens with a chorale-like rendition of the folk song May Day Carol. After two statements of the carol melody, a very spirited Early One Morning begins. While the arrangements of both folk songs are fairly straightforward, heavy use of syncopation, percussion layering and a familiar harmonic language make Two British Folk Songs distinctively Del Borgo.
