Program Notes
The story line of Puccini’s sad yet romantic opera Turandot was taken from a Persian collection of stories called The Book of One Thousand and One Days. Set in ancient China, the opera includes the famous tenor aria Nessun Dorma and has captivated the hearts of audiences since its first performance in 1926. The opera, unfinished at the time of Puccini’s death in 1924, was completed by Franco Alfano. The first performance was held at the Teatro alla Scala, conducted by the legendary Arturo Toscanini.
In 2006 the Saitama Sakae High School Wind Orchestra and the Kanazawa Technical High School Wind Ensemble both performed this arrangement by Yo Goto for the All Japan Band Contest, drawing attention and interest from thousands of concert band fans. Declared by Band Journal to be “More dramatic than the original!”, this collection of Puccini’s melodies is beautifully scored and artfully represents the major scenes from the opera.

This medley includes melodies from the arias Popolo di Pechino! (Introduction), Gira la cote!, Nessun Dorma!, La mia vittoria (La terza risposta), Diecimila anni nostro Imperatore!, and Padre augusto (Finale).
