Biography

Truman Elwell Rickard (22 January 1882 – 18 April 1948) was an American composer.

The son of college professor Charles Truman Rickard, Truman studied at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis from 1900 through 1904. He is best known for composing Hail! Minnesota, a fight song for the University of Minnesota that was a adopted as the Minnesota state song in 1945.

Responding to a 1925 contest to find an additional fight song for the school, Rickard also entered and won with a piece entitled Minnesota! Let's Go!. Rickard's fight song can still be heard at Minnesota Golden Gopher athletic events, but is now known as Minnesota Fight.
