Biography

Travis Rigby (b. 1991), from San Antonio, Texas, is a student at the University of Kansas.

Performance experience in rock drums, praise-band piano, and classical percussion all led to Travis Rigby falling in love with composition. With a strong affinity for large ensemble writing in particular, he began to write music in late 2011 at the age of twenty. Shortly after, he won the 2012 Tennessee Valley Young Composers' Competition for his orchestral score Overture to a Cinematic Adventure. Travis has continued to study composition since then, and will graduate from the University of Kansas, where he studied with James Barnes, Forrest Pierce, and Ingrid Stölzel, with a MM in Music Composition.

In 2015, Travis won the Robert E. Foster Prize for wind band composition with Sonoran Splendor. The Foster Prize is awarded to a KU student who submits the best-judged piece for band. Robert Foster was the director of bands at KU for 31 years and was a gracious supporter of new music.
