Program Notes

Atonality is the perceived lack of relationship between a collection of pitches.  Of course, the way in which one perceives something is tailored by his or her personal experiences.  A violinist’s tonal Sacre du Printemps may be an accountant’s atonal Rite of Spring.  The way in which a performer hears a piece of music and subsequently performs it is also an important factor in establishing tonality versus atonality.  The spoken title of this fanfare illustrates this idea. Although the spelling of the title reveals the intended harmonic nature of the work, it is ultimately the listener who makes temporary judgment on its tonal character.
