Program Notes
Toccata was commissioned by the North Jersey Area Band Association for the 2007 North Jersey High School Symphonic Band, directed by Dawn Russo. Originating in the 16th century as a style of keyboard writing, the toccata is a type of composition which generally features fast passage work, rhythmic drive and motivic development in a relatively short span of time. Although the definition of the term and the general style of the form has changed over the centuries, the toccata’s energetic and whimsical characteristics have been retained. This composition is a modern setting of these general ideas in the concert band medium.
