Program Notes
Three Scenes from Home is inspired by my childhood adventures playing in the woods behind our house. At first glance, the woods may have looked like a small forest with trees and trails, but as a child, those woods provided endless opportunities for imagination and adventure.
Three Scenes from Home is comprised of three continuous movements (Bike Ride, Tree House, Outlaws). My brother, my friends, and I spent many afternoons riding our bikes through the woods, sometimes racing (in what was surely some kind of major championship in our minds), and other times just riding to ride. We peered out of our tree house on the edge of the woods and saw a plethora of possible scenes and stories, including our narrow escape from the "outlaws," the neighborhood dirt-bike-riders. They created elaborate trails and jumps in the woods and rode much faster than our BMX bikes could carry us, and when you heard their engines coming in the distance, you ride away as fast as you could or hid for cover. In the end, this piece is a collection of simple scenes and stories and an invitation to let your imagination take you on an adventure.
