Program Notes

The quotations upon which this suite was founded were more familiar when it was written than they are today. The first two can be traced to sixteenth-century writings, and the third was a conversational phrase. No doubt they are to be found somewhere in the rare books of Sousa's personal library.

The three quotations are:

  • The King of France (marched up the hill with twenty thousand men; the King of France marched down the hill and ne'er went up again.)
  • I, Too, Was Born in Arcadia
  • In Darkest Africa (Nigger in the Woodpile)
