Program Notes

While enjoying what he called “the soul-shaking hillscapes of Western Argyllshire” on his trip to Scotland, Grainger arranged fourteen folksongs: they are his earliest ventures into folksong harmonization, and stand with the best of his work in this area. This is Not My Plaid is number 4 in Grainger’s collection Songs of the North. Its simplicity notwithstanding, it is clearly Grainger’s work. Even at an early age Grainger's harmonic sense and sensitivity to highlighting the beauty of the folk melody is evident. Chal Ragsdale’s arrangement is part of a set published by Aux Arcs Music.
