Program Notes
"They're Off" is a phrase used while racing horses who gallop. It is also the title of a race-horse-themed galop published in 19181. The fifth and last of such compositions by the outstanding circus composer Fred A. Jewell (1875-1936), it appeared soon aftwer Jewell retired from touring with traveling circuses in later 1917 in favor of a more stable life. In early 1918 he became the director of the local band in Fairfield, Iowa, where the style of music performed tended to be more conventional than the relatively frenetic and colorful numbers used under the big top.
While we are on the theme of horses, galops also have been popular with bands playing at rodeos, where fast and short pieces are required.
- Program Note from Circus Songs
This fun-filled, rollicking galop from the golden age of the circus is accelerated excitement for performers and audience alike. This sounds great at a wide range of tempos and your band will love seeing just how fast they can go.
- Program Note adapted from publisher
This arrangement dedicated to the world's greatest bass drummer, Mr. Doug MacLeod.
