Program Notes
Inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, These Things Which Divide was commissioned by and for James Patrick Miller and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra in the summer of 2019. After the fall of The Wall in November of 1989, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra had the pleasure of being the first American ensemble to perform at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in the former East Berlin on January 29, 1990.
These events got my brain churning. We as humans create divides. Both literally and figuratively, we put up walls. We find reasons to separate ourselves. We justify these divides. These happen between friends, relatives, neighbors, strangers, anyone. I wanted to explore the breaking of these walls musically.
