Program Notes

You take your place in an aeroplane and wait expectantly for the motors to spark into life and for the plane to taxi onto the runway. Then it’s full throttle and with a roar of the engines you leave everything behind you. Below, the world is in miniature; you thrill at the freedom of flying high and take in the spectacular drama of the clouds. It’s moments such as these that Daniel Weinberger has captured in music in Take Off.

- Program Note from publisher

This short, dynamic piece would serve as an exciting opener to any concert or contest program. The composer views the beginning of a concert as being like a jet plane taking off, and this composition effectively conveys that image. An energetic opening section, with driving sixteenth-note lines and syncopated passages played by woodwinds and percussion, portray the power of the engines as the jet moves down the runway. The brass players then join in with accented lines that increase in volume as the plane picks up the speed necessary for flight. Flowing melodic lines supported by a variety of rhythmic figures represent the jet soaring above the clouds. A dramatic final section brings the breath-taking flight to an end.
